Having been a poor student, worked for a financial institution and volunteered at an NPO supporting orphans, I can now say this with certainty: "What does not generate money has no value"

What brought me to the field of finance was "making money", which was a far clearer incentive for me in picking a job compared to things like "satisfaction that has comes with a job" that I heard at job seminars to surfeit. As I had expected, it was very exciting for me to work at a financial institution: investors unafraid of risks investing every second, huge amounts of money going back and forth in the market, and banks earning commissions from them.

A few years later, what led me to do volunteer work for orphans was "Lehman shock". While some people thought that the effects would remain within the domain of the financial market, the real economy deteriorated and many people lost their jobs. It probably was not only me who felt that there must be something wrong with merely making money.

While working with the NPO that supports orphans (the volunteer members have their own jobs elsewhere just like I do), I recognized the importance of finance. The resources of the organizations were the members' voluntary labor and donations and subsidies from individuals and outside organizations. Where on earth do these come from?

Now, financing what matters to me is important to me. Any cause that is apparently noble and worthwhile still needs to make money in order to make it sustainable. In other words, without making money, no action can be sustainable, causing misplaced kindness to someone who needs help.

If the only way to finance such activity is to rely on donations and subsidies, given that sympathy is what persuades people to give money, how long can it continue? The bigger number of tragedies, the more donations do people make? Is the source of subsidies unlimited?

A person can sympathize with someone else only so much and the source of subsidies is limited. If your only way to raise money is by appealing to people, it will be blown away when something even more tragic than your cause happens.

How wonderful business is! It takes risks, generates values, hires employees, and pays them. On top of that, it pays tax. Employees go to work no matter how good or bad they feel because they do need money to live. What else can be a sustainable structure as good as this?

Finally, I recognize that what truly important is not how to make money but what you make money for. However, whatever you do is merely a hobby unless it produces some values, in other words, making money.
